Can You Imagine - 18+ Percent
By Brad Rachielles
When you REALLY want a home.... When it is a burning thing that just has to be done for your family.... When "settling in" and really being a solid part of the community is absolutely important.... and, again, you really want a home, analyzing the investment aspects may not be the best move. Rather, letting your heart participate in some decisions can make a world of difference.
In the 1980s, I had a different career. being on the corporate ladder for a national manufacturer meant that promotions awarded generally meant relocation. It wasn't like a bank or a retail situation where a promotion caused you to change offices in the same building. Relocation for me us (I have a wonderful wife who willingly participates in this adventure with me), involved moves from Illinois to Memphis, TN.... to Coral Gables, FL.... back to Illinois.... to Kirkland, WA.... to Charlotte, NC.... to Upland, CA where we are now - all with the same company.
During most of those moves (all of the moves after my son was born) we felt it important to become a part of the community. It was important that we own a home that we could make right for my son. We made home a very special place. We did things with our homes that you just couldn't do with rentals to make it special wherever we went.
When making new friends or greeting new customers, they always wanted to know where we moved from, and where we moved to. Saying " we bought a home in Kirkland, or we bought a home in Upland conveyed that we were there for sure. We had made an investment in the community.
The concept of making home the best that it can be, really has nothing to do with buying.
The phrase " Your home is where the heart is" wins all arguments and we can prove that too. But also know that being able to do special things for the kids can be important too. When you own a home, you can put up that swing set in the yard - It's your home. You can decorate the yard for whatever holiday and be more festive - It's your home. You can put up that race car wallpaper for your son - It's your home. You can add that security system for the wife - It's your home. LIFE IS GOOD - and home ownership can add significantly to it in addition to matters of the heart.
Call Me Crazy - But I REALLY Believe Home Ownership Is Important... How Important?...
Simply stated, I have always looked beyond the investment. We Did buy a home in Kirkland in the 1980s. I remember iinsanely high interest rates, taking out a second and getting the seller to cary some of it with a 5 year balloon. Yes, he wanted to sell in tough times, and I wanted to buy because it was important. CAN YOU IMAGINE - 18+ PercentI? I could have rented for less.
Want to see what I mean about insanely high interest? See the following chart courtesy of the California Association of REALTORS. When you consider this downward progression of rates, and what you can add to your already wonderful family... NOW IS A GOOD TIME TO BUY A HOUSE FOR YOUR FAMILY! This is EASY. Be glad that this is not 1980.
