At Home in Upland

Memories are Saluted

Memories are Saluted.

photo salute to flagIt was a long weekend. My wife and I decided to take a relaxing trip to Santa Barbara. The weather was great, the food fantastic and the town was full of visitors enjoying life.

As has been our tradition from childhood, we planned to attend a memorial service on Monday so we asked what the traditions in Santa Barbara were and we were directed to the Veterans Memorial Building at the beach.

Not knowing a soul, we entered and took a seat. The hall soon filled to capacity and the memorial service began.

As the introductions, speeches and patriotic music progressed, we noted a row of about 20 floral wreathes, each bearing the banner or name of a different veterans organization. At a point in the program, each group was honored. As the group was recognized, a veteran marched to their wreath and saluted... in memory of all who had served, survivors or fallen. It was apparent that life after the service of our country had been OK for some, and others had lingering pain and challenges. All salutes to their comrades were very moving... and very difficult for some. It was important for all to be there for the tribute, regardless...

Afterwards, it was obvious that even though we knew no names, we were not among strangers. We all had a common bond.

GOD BLESS AMERICA!
